About the OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow? (formerly Hydro SSE Arena)

The OVO Hydro Arena is located in Glasgow, Scotland on the site of Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. The arena opened officially on 30th September 2013 with a Rod Stewart concert, and has a capacity of 12,000 (everyone seated) or 13,000 in a standing performance. Designed by the London based Foster + Partners, the SSE Hydro will play host to international musical stars, global entertainment and sports events, and will attract one million visitors each year which makes it the 5th busiest entertainment venue after Madison Square Garden, The O2 arena and others. On November 9th 2013, The OVO Hydro Arena was chosen to host the 20th annual MTV European Music Awards which will occur in 2014. This will be the fifth time the United Kingdom has hosted and the second time Scotland has hosted the event after Edinburgh in 2003. The OVO Hydro Arena will augment the SECC’s existing facilities, and will play host to around 140 events every year. From its opening in 2013, The OVO Hydro Arena has the potential to inject an additional £131 million annually into the local economy.

Glasgow OVO Hydro Arena becomes OVO Hydro

The arena was initially named The Hydro after its main sponsor Scottish Hydro Electric. The arena was known as The SSE Hydro until October 2021, when it was announced that the name was to change to 'OVO Hydro', after its new sponsor OVO Energy, with a focus on making the venue more sustainable.
